It is with deep sadness we have to inform our members that Frank Lockhart, a stalwart of umpiring and sport generally, has passed away.

Frank became a much respected figure in both hockey and cricket over many years. His cricket at Oxford University identified him as someone who would make his mark on the game, and he became a very successful club cricketer, who then moved into umpiring where he reached Minor Counties standard, and was well known throughout Essex as one of the top umpires in the county, as well as umpiring at Lords. He was a member for many years at Woodford Wells Cricket Club where he finished umpiring only this summer.

His hockey career was equally successful with many years service to Essex and East umpiring. He umpired at the top level in the East, and many said he was close to an appointment by the England Selectors. He had a long spell as secretary of ECHUA before the merger, and was a Selector for a long time. When NPUA was formed Frank became its first Appointments Secretary, a demanding post which he filled with considerable flair for many years. He followed this with several years service as an NPUA Match Delegate.

He was a popular figure at many hockey and cricket clubs in the East, and became a regular figure at the Barcelona Hockey Tournament, where he was honoured with a special presentation recently. Until last year he was taking regular appointments with Essex HUA, and was a regular at School games in the East, as well as England Masters matches - not bad at 80 +!

His involvement with Crostyx Hockey Club goes back a long way.

He was a much admired umpire in both sports, who was always sought out after games to socialise and discuss decisions.

His friends and colleagues will miss him enormously. He was always supportive on the pitch and off it, and had a never ending catalogue of stories. One of Hockey's greats; there have not been many of them.

Frank Lockhart 1933 - 2018
