Dear Member The renewal of your membership to the Essex Umpiring Association is now due and would ask you to pay by using the payment methods shown on the renewals form. Please check with your club to find out if they are making a bulk payment for umpires as double payment causes problems for the treasurer. The fee this year will be FIVE pounds for all members. Juniors (Under 18's) will remain the same at Two pounds. If you took a course after February 2018 and paid a membership fee you do not have to pay again for 2018/2019 season but if you could send an email to confirm this ,it will assist the administration of the membership lists. Just a reminder, if you intend to umpire League games for your Club, please remember that you have to be member of a County Umpiring Association. With this in mind, so that the Divisional Reps can prepare for the season, please join before the 1st September 2018. More information and payment methods can be found on the renewals form which can be downloaded on the Essex Hockey website - direct link here: https://goo.gl/j53ivh If you have any problems please contact Chris Row
Within EHUA we are always looking for ways and opportunities to further develop and encourage umpiring within the County. With a new season about to start we are we are looking to train and develop new umpire coaches. Is this something you would be interested in? Umpire coaches are vital in our ability to raise consistency and standards across the county. There are umpires who have recently completed their Level 1 course who need some looking after and development and we also need to be able to help and assist those umpires have the desire to progress towards the County or Regional Pools and perhaps beyond. EHU has a proud reputation of developing umpires - one that we would like to continue in the years ahead. The more coaches we have the greater coverage we can provide. Even if you might only be available one or two Saturdays per month we would be delighted to hear from you. Additionally for ALL active umpires irrespective of how long you have been umpiring we have an opportunity for you to participate in open and frank discussions, to receive some tips and advice and more importantly to ask the questions you may have always wanted to ask but have not done so. Come and join us at the Essex Cup and Rose Bowl over the weekend of 01 / 02 Sep (Redbridge Sports centre) Whilst the on-field umpires will be being coached during the day anyone who comes along can receive tips and advise on the side-lines If you are interested in either or both of the above, please contact Paul Sexby directly. If you wish to discuss please call outside of working hours (07941390641), preferably after 19:30; alternatively please email EHumpdev@btinternet.com.

It has been brought to the EHUA attention during games umpires are not giving the correct decisions when a player deliberately lifts the ball by a hit when taking a free hit or during open play. Many conversations have been had, during and after the games, in clubhouses and on social media. I have been asked to put something on the website to help clear this up. So I will draw your attention to rule 9.9. I have highlighted the relevant sentence. 9 Players must not intentionally raise the ball from a hit except for a shot at goal. A raised hit must be judged explicitly on whether or not it is raised intentionally. It is not an offence to raise the ball unintentionally from a hit, including a free hit, anywhere on the field unless it is dangerous. If the ball is raised over an opponent’s stick or body on the ground, even within the circle, it is permitted unless judged to be dangerous. Players are permitted to raise the ball with a flick or scoop provided it is not dangerous. A flick or scoop towards an opponent within 5 metres is considered dangerous. If an opponent is clearly running into the shot or into the attacker without attempting to play the ball with their stick, they should be penalised for dangerous play. So, an intentionally raised ball that is HIT from a free hit or in open play is not permitted and should be penalised accordingly, if it is persistent then a personal penalty should be considered. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding. Chris Row EHUA Secretary
